We are a coalition of congregations, businesses, student groups and community leaders organizing to increase access to and awareness of Fair Trade products and goods in Greater Boston. We worked and achieved ‘Fair Trade Town’ status for Boston in 2010, making The Hub the 20th such city in the country. Local business campaign partners like Autonomie Project and Ben and Jerry’s are emblematic of just how collaborative the underpinnings to the greater Fair Trade movement are, and how that communal approach informs the drive and growth of Fair Trade Boston.

Fair Trade Boston Coalition Profile: Autonomie Project is a local Fair Trade fashion and footwear business that is seeking (and succeeding!) to transform the ethics of the clothing and branding we wear and consume. Their vision is holistic and their entrepreneurship extends far beyond their own business plan – they consistently and selflessly give Fair Trade Boston an authoritative and empowering voice at events – be it exposing consumers to the stories behind the issue of Fair Trade on educational panels, organizing and executing a Fair Trade Fashion Show, or participating as citizen advocates in pushing Boston’s City Council to pass our Fair Trade Resolution on May 5, 2010. Autonomie Project’s standard-bearing is a key reason and example of why Fair Trade Boston is making our fair city exactly that with energy and a unique, vital voice.

Every day the practice of Fair Trade improves the lives of farmers, artisans, producers and their families by increasing incomes, improving working conditions and promoting democratic principles in the workplace. Fair Trade consumers benefit from receiving high quality, unique goods and the knowledge that their responsible purchase has made a positive impact on our world.

Fair Trade Boston is part of the greater Fair Trade Towns USA movement that is campaigning to help more cities officially declare themselves promoters of fair trade. The national movement unites community activists from across the country who are dedicatd to the principles of fair trade. By organizing our communities at the local level, we are able to make a tangible impact on the US market to demand that international justice and equity is a priority.
